The EPA Enforcement Cases Search is designed to allow easy access to publicly available federal EPA civil enforcement data tracked by the Integrated Compliance Information System (ICIS). (Information about criminal cases is not available through this search.) ICIS is a multi-statute case activity tracking and management system for EPA-initiated civil judicial and administrative enforcement cases. Case information is supplied and updated by case attorneys in EPA's Office of Regional Counsel and the Headquarters Office of Civil Enforcement. The primary data contained for each enforcement action are: case descriptive information (case name, statute and section violated, and case attorneys assigned to the case), major milestones dates (referred, filed, concluded, and issued dates), and results and penalty information. ICIS replaced EPA’s Civil Enforcement Docket (DOCKET) in 2002. The ECHO EPA Enforcement Cases Search permits the selection of enforcement cases based on a number of facility, geographic and/or case-related criteria. Once selected, a detailed case report, which provides a complete summary of the enforcement activity, may be generated for each, or a detailed facility report for those facilities associated with the enforcement case may be accessed. The following constraints are placed on the ICIS case selection process:
Cases are selected by filling in the input boxes, checking desired options or choosing from the pull-down menus. Once submitted, the query will return a search results page listing any enforcement cases that met the select criteria. The ICIS search results page includes the EPA case number, case name, case type, primary law and section cited, as well as major milestone dates and settlement penalties and supplemental environmental project (SEP) value, where applicable. Links are provided to generate and view detailed case or facility reports. The case report provides a summary of information about the enforcement action, but does not include full text of the actual order or settlement document(s). Copies of the actual settlement documents may be obtained from the EPA headquarters or regional office that initiated the enforcement action, from the Department of Justice (for civil judicial settlements), Federal Register notices, or from commercial services such as Westlaw or Lexis-Nexis. The EPA Cases and Settlements page provides links to significant headquarters cases and settlements involving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1998. |
